چکیده

We explore the scenario where the core of a neutron star (having experienced a transition to an up and down quark phase) shrinks into the equilibrated quark object after reaching strange quark matter saturation density (where a composition of up, down and strange quarks is the favored state of matter). The overlaying (envelope) material free-falls following the core contraction releasing upto 10 53 ergs in energy as radiation, partly as a result of the conversion of envelope material to quarks. This phenomena, we named Quark-Nova, leads to a wide variety of ejectae ranging form the Newtonian, " dirty " to the ultra-relativistic fireball. The mass range of the corresponding compact remnant (the quark star) ranges from less than 0.3M⊙ up to a solar mass. We discuss the connection between Quark-Novae and Gamma ray bursts and suggest the recently studied GRB011211 event as a plausible Quark-Nova candidate.

Quark Nova compact remnants

We explore planet formation in the Quark Nova scenario. If a millisecond pulsar explodes as a Quark Nova, a protoplanetary disk can be formed out of the metal rich fall-back material. The propeller mechanism transfers angular momentum from the born quark star to the disk that will go through viscous evolution with later plausible grain condensation and planet formation. As a result, earth-size ...

Supernova Sn2006gy as a First Ever Quark Nova?

The most luminous Supernova SN2006gy (more than a 100 times brighter than a typical supernova) has been a challenge to explain by standard models. For example, pair instability supernovae which are luminous enough seem to have too slow a rise, and core collapse supernovae do not seem to be luminous enough. We present an alternative scenario involving the quark-nova phenomenon (an explosive tran...

Quark-novae, Cosmic Reionization, and Early R-process Element Production

We examine the case for Quark-Novae as possible sources for the reionization of the universe. We find that dual-shock Quark-Nova events can produce enough photons to reionize Hydrogen in the entire Inter-Galactic medium (IGM) by z ∼ 6. Such events can explain the large optical depth τe ∼ 0.17 as measured by WMAP, if the clumping factor of the material being ionized is small. We suggest a way in...

Neutrino Emission and Mass Ejection in Quark Novae

We explore the role of neutrinos in a Quark Nova explosion. We study production of neutrinos during this event, their propagation and their interactions with the surrounding quark matter and neutron-rich envelope. We address relevant physical issues such as the timescale for the initial core collapse, the total energy emitted in neutrinos and their effect on the low density matter surrounding t...

THE ROLE OF QUARK POLARIZATION IN HEAVY QUARK FRAGMENTATION

We calculate the exact fragmentation functions for c and b quark fragmentation taking into account the spin orientation of the initial heavy quark in the form of analytical and rather simple expressions. Our calculations show that spin orientation may have an important effect on the fragmentation spectrum. This effect is more striking in the cases of c ?D, D*; c? ? , ? , and ?B , B *.
